널뛰기 (neolttwigi) is a traditional Korean activity hosted during lunar calendar holidays, originating from upper-class girls' and women’s desire to see beyond the walls of the complex (both architectural and social) within which they were confined. Its connection to the moon, girlhood, and patriarchy makes this cultural artifact a highly poignant and effective device through which to tell the story of Salomé, in which the titular princess is a femme fatale whose beauty is often compared to the moon. Starting with this idea, I expanded into research of Joseon Dynasty 한옥 (hanok) architecture to create the white model pictured above and below.
