In order to tell this classic Henrik Ibsen story about patriarchal oppression, loveless marriage, and a loss of agency through the the directorial point of view “Mythic Americana,” I transformed the entire venue into the titular character’s new apartment, asking audience members to enter through the entryway of the unit to get to their seats. Through the “apartment” objects in sets of three – the stools, couch cushions, frames, and coat stand poles – foreshadow the suffocating prospect of parenthood for Hedda and her husband George, while yellow objects – the piano, stools, paint swatches, and lamp – signal Hedda’s repressed fire and attempt to assert agency.
